The partially bermed and thicker insulated walls add extra protection against cold winter winds for this home designed for north orientation. This plan includes insulated vinyl siding with triple-glazed insulated wood windows and doors, 2" x 6" and 2" x 8" wall construction. The basement features insulated walls and a natural cooling system that provides a constant 55-degree earth temperature to help cool the house in warm weather. The shake roof has over three times the insulating value of asphalt shingles. The atrium with two-story window wall and vaulted great room provide southern views and natural warmth from the sun.
